Job DescriptionTitle: Arborist AssistantDepartment: ParksEmployment Classification: Hourly, non-exemptEmployment Status: Full-timeUpdated August 2026Grade G.11GENERAL PURPOSEAssists with the care, maintenance, planting, pruning, and removal of City-owned or maintained trees and vegetation to supporttheir health, safety, appearance, and long-term sustainability.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the direction of the Parks Manager with oversight from the City Arborist.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assists with planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning, removal, and maintenance on trees located on City owned ormaintained property. Performs tree care such as pruning, tree felling, bucking, brush chipping, and tree removals using a variety of groundand aerial techniques and equipment. May include using rope & harness and spur & flip line climbing techniques,aerial man lifts, chainsaws, and rigging systems. Applies horticultural chemicals, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and other prescribed materials, under thedirection of the City Arborist and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and safety guidelines. Follows appropriate techniques necessary to ensure proper planting, maintenance, removal and delivery of trees,shrubs, etc., on property owned and/or maintained by the City including but not limited to tree pruning, spraying,removal, planting, and stump grinding. May climb trees or use a lift to remove dead, diseased or otherwise damaged or unwanted limbs or tree tops; prunes,fells and cuts up trees; piles trimmings for pick up and disposal. Operates and maintains various types of equipment including but not limited to aerial lift equipment, stump cutter,chain saw, spraying equipment, etc. Provides recommendations for actions including plantings, removals, and other management practices with the CityArborist. Inspects trees for general health, hazards, and maintenance needs and reports findings to the Arborist. Maintains equipment, tools, vehicles, and work areas in a safe and serviceable condition, performing routinemaintenance and reporting repair needs as necessary. Supports programs and presentations in relation to Arbor Day. Assists in snow removal around facilities May be required to be a stand-by for an on-call rotation for the snow removal Performs related duties as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation: High School Diploma or equivalentExperience: Some experience in tree care, landscaping, grounds maintenance, horticulture, forestry, parks maintenance, or arelated field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Preferred One year or more of experience in arboriculture, forestry, landscaping, parks maintenance, or a related field. Arborist Certification by the International Society of Arboricultural (ISA) Familiarity with tree industry personal protective equipment, climbing gear and hardware, rigging tools, ropes,knots, bends and hitches, and aerial lift equipment. ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Intermediate computer knowledge with the ability to read reports and gather information.Certifications/Licenses: Must be at least 18yrs old. Requires a valid Utah Driver’s License. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and driving record check May be required to obtain ISA certified Arborist within 2 years from date of hire. May be required to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 6 months from date of hire. May be required to possess a current pesticide applicator license. May be required to obtain certification(s) on confined space entry, flagging, CPR, and trenching and shoring, etc.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to safely perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including lifting, carrying,digging, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods. Ability to work safely at heights and around traffic, utility lines, power equipment, chemicals, and other job-sitehazards. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English. Ability to lead a team and motivate others to perform. Ability to effectively apply chemicals for the abatement and eradication of noxious weeds and insects.TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED May use motorized vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and hand tools.WORK ENVIRONMENT Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking standing, stooping,sitting, kneeling, and reaching. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performing required job functions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity must exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions,emotional stability and discriminating thinking and ability to maintain composure in adverse situations Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.NOTE:In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster, that threatens the life, health and/orsafety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers.
